A New Beginning in Pennsylvania
When the owners of JA Buffet arrived in Pennsylvania from China, they brought with them something no journey could diminish: a deep love of food, the determination to build something lasting, and a belief that hard work and community could open any door. The road was not without its challenges โ a new country, a new language, and the very real difficulty of establishing a life and a business from the ground up.
But Hamburg, Pennsylvania, opened its arms. And a remarkable group of people showed up โ offering guidance, friendship, and a helping hand โ to make what seemed impossible, possible.
The Name Behind the Buffet
JA Buffet is named in memory of Officer John A. Ayello of the Hamburg Borough Police Department โ a man of extraordinary kindness whose impact on this family's story cannot be overstated. John was there when it mattered most: helping the owners navigate the language barrier, looking out for them as newcomers to the community, and ensuring they were treated with the fairness and respect every person deserves.
Among his many gifts was an unexpected one โ a love of Pennsylvania Dutch cooking. John shared those recipes and traditions with the owners, and those dishes found their way onto the buffet. That culinary bridge between cultures, between East and West, between new and old, is as much a part of JA Buffet as anything else on the menu.
In Memory of Officer John A. Ayello
Officer John A. Ayello served the Hamburg Borough Police Department with honor and dedication. He passed away on September 8, 2000, in the line of duty while serving his community. His photograph has hung in the restaurant since the day it opened โ a quiet, permanent tribute to the man who helped make it all possible.
Built by a Community, Given Back to One
JA Buffet did not come to be through the efforts of one family alone. Through the help of many friends made along the way, the owners are fortunate and blessed to have had a loving community filled with kind and generous people who showed up in ways large and small, and made an everlasting impact on this family. JA Buffet exists because of them.
For over 30 years, this restaurant has stood as both a thank-you and a promise โ a place where the Hamburg community can always gather, share a meal, and feel at home. Every dish served is a reflection of the two worlds that shaped this family: the traditions brought from China, and the warmth found right here in Pennsylvania.
When you walk through our doors, you become part of that story too.
